How the Odds Comparison Tool Works
Overview
The Odds Comparison tool pulls every available price for a single market from every connected sportsbook and ranks them so you can bet the best number. Taking the top price on every wager is the highest-ROI habit a bettor can build, often worth more than 2% to your bottom line over a season.
The Math
Sportsbooks each set their own line and add a cut called the vig. The same Lakers moneyline might be -135 at one book and -120 at another. Converting American odds to decimal makes the math simple:
- -135 = 1/(135/(135+100)) = 1.741 decimal
- -120 = 1/(120/(120+100)) = 1.833 decimal
The difference of 0.092 in decimal payout is roughly a 5.3% larger return on every winning ticket. Across 500 bets a year, that gap is the entire difference between a losing season and a winning one.
When To Use It
Use it before every bet, no exceptions. Even recreational bettors who do nothing else should line shop. It is also the foundation for every other tool on this page, since arb, +EV, and middle detection all depend on knowing the full price distribution.
Example Walk-through
You want to back the Celtics on the road. You see:
- DraftKings: +145
- FanDuel: +152
- BetMGM: +148
- Caesars: +155
On a $100 stake, +155 returns $155 in profit while +145 returns only $145. That is $10 of free money per bet for the same risk. Place 200 bets at the average best line and you have captured roughly $2,000 in pure line-shopping value.
Second example, a totals market: Bills/Dolphins Over 48.5 is -110 at DraftKings and -105 at Caesars. The implied probabilities are 52.38% vs 51.22%. Same outcome, but Caesars requires you to be right less often to break even. Over 1,000 such bets at $100 each, that 1.16% edge from price alone is worth roughly $1,160.
Common Mistakes
- Loyalty to one book. The friction of toggling apps is real, but rebates and rewards almost never make up for consistently taking the worst price.
- Ignoring totals and props. Line-shop differences are often biggest on alt lines and player props where books disagree the most.
- Stale comparisons. Lines move fast. A 30-second-old quote can already be gone. Always confirm at the book before clicking bet.
- Forgetting reduced juice books. A standard -110 vs a -105 reduced-juice book is a free 2.4% per bet.
