FanDuel is the second half of the US DFS duopoly and the operator most credited with bringing daily fantasy mainstream back in 2009. Paid cash contests are available in 44 of 50 states. The unavailable states are Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Washington, with Louisiana restricted in select parishes. That footprint is slightly wider than DraftKings on paper because FanDuel continues to offer fantasy in Iowa and other markets without the same format restrictions.
FanDuel DFS lives inside the broader FanDuel wallet alongside sportsbook, casino and, in three states, PokerStars poker. That integration is the key structural change of the past year.
The current new-user offer is a deposit match up to $100 at a 4% release rate plus a first-contest refund up to $10 as site credit if your first paid entry does not cash. Minimum deposit is $10. The match is smaller than DraftKings' $500 cap, which reflects FanDuel's historically lower acquisition cost thanks to cross-sell from its massive sportsbook user base.
FanDuel's contest menu is slightly narrower than DraftKings but cleaner for newcomers. The weekly Sunday Million is the flagship NFL tournament with a $25 entry and seven-figure guaranteed prizes during peak season. Beyond the Sunday Million:
Pick'em style contests were phased out in most states during 2024 after regulatory pushback in New York, Michigan and Florida, and FanDuel now routes those users to its sportsbook parlay products where available.
Sunday Million NFL slates regularly guarantee $5M–$10M in combined prizes across all contest tiers. The headline Sunday Million itself guaranteed $3M top prize for the 2025 season according to FanDuel marketing. NBA slates run roughly 30–40% of DraftKings' guarantees on primetime nights. MLB and NHL guarantees are competitive. Single-game showdown contests on Monday Night Football and Thursday Night Football hit $250K–$500K top prizes during peak season.
Salary cap is $60,000 for most sports. NFL scoring uses half-PPR (0.5 points per reception), which differs from DraftKings' full-PPR and meaningfully changes optimal lineup construction; pass-catching running backs are less valuable on FanDuel. NBA scoring awards 1 point per point, 1.2 per rebound, 1.5 per assist, 3 per steal/block and -1 per turnover, with no double-double bonus. MLB uses a simpler stat-line with stolen bases at 6 points. Late swap is enabled. Lineup requirements differ slightly: NFL uses QB/2RB/3WR/TE/FLEX/D, dropping the kicker that DraftKings also omits.
The FanDuel Fantasy app is a separate install from the sportsbook app but shares a single wallet login. The lineup builder is the cleanest in DFS, with larger player cards and clearer salary-remaining math. CSV upload is supported on desktop but capped at 150 entries per contest, which is tighter than DraftKings and deliberately discourages mass multi-entry. The beginner lobby is the single best onboarding tool in US DFS and is the main reason casual players should start here rather than DraftKings.
FanDuel DFS is the best pick for newcomers and casual players thanks to beginner-protected lobbies, cleaner scoring and the simplest interface on the market. Serious grinders and mass multi-entry players will still prefer DraftKings for contest depth and prize pool size. If you already have a FanDuel sportsbook account the unified wallet makes this the low-friction default. Available in 44 states to 18+ players (19+ in AL, NE; 21+ in MA). Not available in HI, ID, MT, NV or WA. If fantasy stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
