Frequently Asked Questions

Is card counting legal?

Yes, card counting is legal everywhere in the US. It is a skill, not cheating. However, casinos are private businesses and can ban you or limit your bets if they suspect you are counting. Online blackjack uses continuous shuffling, making counting impossible.

What is the best blackjack variant for skilled players?

Single-deck or double-deck blackjack with 3:2 payouts and dealer stands on soft 17 offers the lowest house edge. Avoid games paying 6:5 on blackjack, as this nearly triples the house edge. Spanish 21 can also be favorable with its own optimal strategy.

Advanced Blackjack

Counting, variations like Spanish 21, and when to deviate.

BonusBell Team

You've mastered basic strategy and now you want more. Advanced blackjack covers card counting, rule variations that change strategy, and when to deviate from basic strategy based on the composition of your hand or the remaining deck.

Warning

Card counting is legal but casinos can ban you for it.While not illegal, casinos are private property and can refuse service to skilled players.

Card Counting Basics

Card counting tracks the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the deck:

  • High cards (10, J, Q, K, A) favor the player
  • Low cards (2-6) favor the dealer
  • When many high cards remain, player advantage increases

The Hi-Lo System

The most popular counting system:

Hi-Lo Card Values

CardsCount Value
2, 3, 4, 5, 6+1
7, 8, 90
10, J, Q, K, A-1
Running Count Example
Cards dealt: 5, K, 3, 7, A, 6, J=Count: +1, -1, +1, 0, -1, +1, -1 = 0 (neutral)

Keep a running tally as cards are exposed.

True Count

The running count must be adjusted for decks remaining:

True Count Calculation
True Count = Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining=Running +8 with 2 decks left = True Count +4

True count is what matters for bet sizing decisions.

Strategy Insight

Each +1 true count gives the player roughly 0.5% additional edge. At true count +4, skilled players may have a 1-2% edge over the house.

Counting Strategy Deviations

At certain counts, you deviate from basic strategy:

Common Index Plays (Hi-Lo)

SituationBasic StrategyDeviation Count
16 vs 10HitStand at 0+
15 vs 10HitStand at +4
InsuranceNeverTake at +3
12 vs 3HitStand at +2
10 vs 10HitDouble at +4

These are illustrative; full index charts have dozens of plays

Bet Spreading

Counting is profitable because you bet more when you have the edge:

  • Negative/low count – Bet minimum
  • True count +1 to +2 – 2-3x minimum
  • True count +3 to +4 – 4-6x minimum
  • True count +5+ – 8-10x minimum (or table max)

Good to Know

The spread ratio (max bet ÷ min bet) is crucial. A 1:8 spread might break even. A 1:20 spread generates meaningful profit.

Rule Variations and Their Impact

How Rules Affect House Edge

RuleEffect on Edge
6:5 blackjack (vs 3:2)+1.39% to house
Dealer hits soft 17+0.22% to house
No double after split+0.14% to house
Re-split Aces allowed-0.06% from house
Late surrender-0.08% from house
5-card Charlie win-1.46% from house

Blackjack Variations

Spanish 21

  • All 10s removed from deck (face cards remain)
  • Bonus payouts for 21 with 5+ cards, 6-7-8, 7-7-7
  • Player blackjack always wins, even vs dealer BJ
  • Late surrender allowed after doubling
  • House edge ~0.4% with optimal strategy (different from standard)

Blackjack Switch

  • Play two hands and can swap top cards between them
  • Dealer 22 pushes instead of busting
  • Blackjack pays even money
  • House edge ~0.5% with optimal strategy

Double Exposure

  • Both dealer cards dealt face up
  • Blackjack pays even money; dealer wins ties
  • Requires completely different strategy

Composition-Dependent Strategy

Basic strategy assumes you only know your total. But the actual cards matter:

Composition Example: 16 vs 10
Basic: Hit | Composition: Stand with 4-5-7 (no low cards to catch)

A 16 made of high cards has fewer good draws left in the deck.

Strategy Insight

Composition-dependent strategy gains you only ~0.01-0.02% edge over basic strategy. It's for perfectionists, not practical profit.

Side Bets: Always -EV

Advanced players should still avoid side bets:

Side Bet House Edges

Side BetTypical House Edge
Insurance7.4% (except when counting)
21+3 (poker hand)2-8%
Perfect Pairs2-11%
Lucky Ladies3-25%
Super Sevens11-12%

Pro Tip

Exception: Some side bets become profitable for counters. Lucky Ladies with high counts, for example, can favor the player.

Key Takeaways

  • 1Card counting is legal but will get you banned if detected
  • 2Hi-Lo: +1 for 2-6, -1 for 10-A, 0 for 7-9
  • 3True count = running count ÷ decks remaining
  • 4Each +1 true count ≈ 0.5% additional player edge
  • 5Rule variations (like 6:5 BJ) matter more than counting for most players
  • 6Spanish 21 and Switch have low edges but need different strategies
