Return to Player (RTP)

What is Return to Player (RTP)?

The percentage of wagered money a game returns to players over time.

Last updated:February 22, 2026

Return to Player (RTP) is the theoretical percentage of all money wagered on a game that is paid back to players over time. An RTP of 96% means that for every $100 wagered, $96 is returned to players and $4 goes to the house.

RTP is calculated over millions of spins or hands — it does not predict your results in a single session. A game with 96% RTP could have you up 200% or down 100% in any given session due to variance.

RTP is most commonly discussed with slot machines, where it varies significantly between games. Table games like blackjack and baccarat have fixed RTPs based on their rules and optimal strategy.

In practice

A slot advertised at 96.5% RTP returns $96.50 per $100 wagered across millions of spins — not per session. On a $2 spin clicked 500 times in an hour, you wager $1,000; theoretical return is $965, expected loss $35. Actual session results routinely range from −$1,000 to +$2,500 because slot variance is enormous.

Avoid sub-92% RTP slots (common on cruise-ship and airport machines) — the expected loss at $2/spin jumps to $160/hour. On regulated NJ/MI/PA online slots, published RTPs typically run 94–97%, and filtering for 96%+ is the single highest-EV move a slots player can make before even considering volatility or feature design.

Formula

RTP = Total Amount Returned to Players ÷ Total Amount Wagered × 100
