Montana legalized sports betting in 2019 (HB 725) but built one of the most restrictive markets in the country. The Montana Lottery operates the only sportsbook in the state — Sports Bet Montana, powered by Intralot — and wagers can only be placed at licensed retail locations (taverns, casinos, and restaurants with lottery licenses) or via a geofenced mobile app that only functions when the user is physically inside one of those licensed premises. There is no statewide mobile sports betting and no competing operators.
Beyond the lottery sportsbook, Montana allows video gambling machines (poker, keno, bingo) at licensed bars and taverns under a long-standing framework that pre-dates most state gaming expansions, plus live and simulcast horse racing, charitable bingo and raffles, and tribal gaming at facilities operated by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai, Blackfeet, Crow, Northern Cheyenne, Fort Belknap, Fort Peck, and Chippewa Cree tribes. There are no commercial casinos in the Las Vegas sense, no legal online casino, and DFS contests operate in an unregulated gray area.
For 2026, do not expect a competitive mobile sportsbook market — the lottery monopoly is politically entrenched and the tavern industry that benefits from in-location wagering opposes statewide mobile. Tribal compact renegotiations and any expansion of iGaming would require new legislation. The Montana problem gambling helpline is 1-888-900-9979.
